“If he can run his household, he can run the country” – Why Do Women Support Santorum?

If you’re like me, one of the main questions on your mind throughout Santorum’s campaign is why any woman would want to vote for him. I have previously mentioned that disillusioned women are leaving the Republican party in droves, but of course there are many who are sticking by their man (60% of his website visitors are women). As a young, liberal female, it seems to me that a vote for Santorum is basically a vote against my own autonomy, so I am fascinated to hear what his female supporters have to say.

The New York Times had an article interviewing several women at his rallies about why they support him, and not surprisingly their responses have nothing to do with how capable he would be as a world leader. The majority of his female supporters don’t seem to be concerned with his economic knowledge or global awareness.. Instead, the women feel that because he is  a “wonderful family man,” then he will be able to competently fulfill his duties as President of the United States. Some highlights:

  • “Seven kids!”
  • “Didn’t abort the last one” (which refers to  his daughter Isabella, who was born with the fatal genetic disorder Trisomy 18)
  • “I like that he’s been married only once”
  • “If he can run a household, he can run a country” (my favorite, because if this were true then women would be running this damn place)

I obviously would not vote for Charlie Sheen, but I feel like there are far more important aspects as to what makes a man a good political leader than how many kids he has. There are plenty of great fathers in the world, but I would not vote 99% of them into office. And if we are discussing one’s parental competency as a factor, how exactly can you ignore Obama? He’s only been married once and seems like one of the most loving, devoted fathers out there. I guess some of it has to do with 45% of Alabama primary voters and 52% of Mississippi voters still believing Obama is a Muslim.

So next time you find yourself wondering why on earth any women would vote for Santorum, remember that they think being a good father equates to being a good world leader. Forgive me for wanting a bit more. Just the thought of him being in the same room as Angela Merkel or Hu Jintao makes me cringe.

If you need a palate cleanser, here is a video of Gloria Steinem explaining the importance of voting for Obama in this election.

For those of you who support freedom of choice and mean it (not freedom of YOUR choice only), this is a good reminder of what is at stake here. Our country is not a 1950s household. We do not need a strong man to run things while we retake our “place” back in the kitchen. It’s 2012, and we need someone who embodies what that means, not someone who buries his head in the sand and pretends change doesn’t exist.
